Welcome to Bumble Bee Hedgies' Nursery!

Here you can watch the stories unfold as they happen, and watch babies grow up. Sometimes a story is difficult to hear as babies may pass on, or moms get sick. Breeding and raising hedgehogs can be a lot of fun and exciting! But sometimes it is sad and heart breaking. I have decided to share those stories as they unfold, so that people may understand why babies cost as much as they do, and why it is not advised to try this alone at home... Veterinarian bills can be costly, and a sick hedgehog can't wait a day or two to get help!
Please remember, breeding hedgehogs is not as easy as it sounds. You also need to be USDA licensed if your yearly income is more than $500. (That's 2 babies!) Many breeders will watch out for "Backyard" breeders, and turn them in.

Katniss Kiss  with her babies,
2 days young.  Some of her babies passed away, which is common in any size litter, but especially with first time moms.

UPDATE 10/25/16

A few days after giving birth, Katniss had lost 3 of her 7 hoglets.  The 4 left are doing well. However, Katniss seemed not  well.  Quickly I found out that she had developed a bladder infection  and she was placed on antibiotics.

UPDATE 10/28
Unfortunately, she did not respond like she should have and due the the stress, she had limited her nursing to a minimum. Her babies stopped thriving.

I had to make a very difficult decision.  I either needed to take the risk and let Katniss continue to  try nursing, while keeping her on the same medications, or take her babies and place them with other moms, (hoping they would accept them) and have her be placed on stronger medications.  The risk to place babies with other moms is that they may not accept them and even kill them.  On the other hand, Katniss was  declining fast, and for her to take care of them meant  we could not put her on anything stronger. Her vet and I decided that she needed stronger medication and hands on care.

After lots of prayers, I decided to split the babies up and place them with 2 foster moms. rather than just one.  Both foster moms just had babies which were only 1 and 2 days older than those of Katniss'.    Both moms, took those babies in and took care of them within  minutes! These babies are going to live!

Katniss received  the needed Urgent hands-on Care, stronger medication and IV fluids.

UPDATE 11/01
I am happy to report that Katniss is finally on the way of recovery. It was a rough few days... but now she started eating again  and is moving around more.  She will have a full recovery.  Due to her circumstances, I will retired Katniss early, and keep two of her little girls to continue her line.

UPDATE 11/07
Katniss has fully recovered. She is eating and hunting her favorite bugs.  She will meet her babies when they are old enough, just before they will go to their new homes.
